Edibles 101: Dosing for Beginners

Edibles are the most misunderstood category in cannabis, and they are responsible for almost every bad experience first-timers tell us about. The good news: once you understand the timing, edibles are also the most consistent, longest-lasting, and most enjoyable way to use cannabis for a lot of people.

The single most important rule: start with 2.5 mg of THC. Yes, that is a quarter of a standard 10 mg gummy. Then wait at least two full hours before taking more. Edibles are processed by your liver into a different, more potent compound (11-hydroxy-THC), and that conversion takes time. Most people start to feel something between 45 and 90 minutes in, and the effects keep climbing for another hour or two after that. Eating a second dose at the 30-minute mark because nothing is happening yet is the classic mistake — by the time both doses fully kick in, you are way over your head.

If you do take too much, do not panic. You can't overdose on cannabis in any medically dangerous sense, but you can have a deeply unpleasant few hours. Find a calm space, hydrate, eat something simple, and remember: it always wears off. Some people swear by chewing whole black peppercorns — there is real science behind it; the caryophyllene binds to the same receptors and dampens the high.

Once you find your dose — for most people that's somewhere between 5 and 10 mg — edibles become a totally different tool than smoking. The high lasts four to six hours, comes on gently, and is great for sleep, body relaxation, and creative focus. Just respect the timing.
